Reactions to speech at CSU party congress- “Heil: Laschet’s statement “indecent and undignified”

At the CSU party conference in Nuremberg, Armin Laschet sharply criticized the SPD. Some Social Democrats are now angry about the candidate for Union Chancellor – one of his statements in particular is causing a stir.

In his speech at the CSU party congress in Nuremberg , Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet attracted attention with sharp attacks on the SPD and Red-Green-Red. While he was celebrated with long applause on site, several SPD politicians have already responded to Laschet’s statements with fierce criticism via Twitter.

Among other things, he said: “In all decisions in post-war history, Social Democrats were always on the wrong side.” Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) then stated via Twitter that denying the contribution of social democracy to the development of the country and democracy was “not only forgotten about history, but indecent and undignified”. His SPD colleague Lars Klingenbeil also tweeted: ” Under Laschet, the Union has really lost decency and dignity. It belongs in the opposition!”

Kühnert calls speech “pitiful”

The deputy SPD chairman Kevin Kühnert commented on the speech again with a graphic comparison: “Like when someone is in a descent in a hot air balloon, has already thrown all ballast overboard and now begins to let go of the last and most important belongings so that it somehow still goes up goes. Pitiful, “he wrote on Twitter.

Corona expert and SPD politician  Karl Lauterbach also  responded to Laschet’s words. “How dubious that is. We did a good job together in the Corona crisis. It’s a shame,” he tweeted.

CDU colleague  Jens Spahn  , on the other hand, praised Laschet’s speech. They mark the “starting shot for two weeks full steam ahead of the CDU and CSU “, said the health minister on Twitter.

The 60-year-old had spoken of the federal election as a directional decision. “In crucial moments you have to stay on course and the CDU and CSU stand for this course . With this in mind, I want to become Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.” At the same time, the CDU chief admitted that he had made mistakes in the election campaign: “Of course, everything didn’t go well, we know that ourselves.” But now it is “pointed at the button” – that is why the Union must now fight.

The NRW Prime Minister attacked the political opponent sharply during his 45-minute speech. Among other things, he accused his SPD opponent Olaf Scholz of populist behavior after the raid on the Federal Ministry of Finance and called on the Finance Minister to apologize. “The correct reaction would have been: We’ll help the public prosecutor,” criticized Laschet.

Instead, Scholz would sow doubts about the rule of law. “I hope he’ll get that out of the world soon and apologize.” Germany should be a role model in accepting decisions from prosecutors and judges. After all, one criticizes populists in other countries for not wanting to accept this. Scholz had shown upset on Thursday after the searches by the Osnabrück public prosecutor’s office.

Demand for “zero tolerance policy”

At the same time, Laschet warned of higher taxes if the SPD won an election. The tax increases and debt policy planned by the SPD, the Greens and the Left are “an attack on Germany’s prosperity”. In this context, he allowed himself another tip against his SPD opponent. Olaf Scholz only did a decent job as finance minister because ” Angela Merkel always took care of him”.

In the EU too, after the reconstruction fund with 750 billion euros, one has to return to the course of stability. “We need more Theo Waigel and less plasticizer,” he said, referring to the former CSU finance minister. Laschet also accused Scholz of not having the security situation under control at the G20 summit in Hamburg – unlike Bavaria, for example, at the G7 summits with a “zero tolerance policy”.

In the past few days, the CSU had increased the pressure on Laschet and demanded a turnaround from him. CSU General Secretary Markus Blume said in an interview that the Union would do better with Söder in surveys.

Expert considers applause for Laschet to be authentic

Even before his speech, however, the delegates of the CSU party congress received Laschet with long, sustained applause. Söder called the greeting “euphoric”. “We want you to become Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany,” he said to Laschet.

According to the political scientist Heinrich Oberreuter, the big applause for the candidate for chancellor was real and not staged. “Laschet struck the soul of the party congress delegate. He not only satisfied the opportunism,” said Oberreuter. It was interesting to observe that the approval for Laschet continued to grow during the speech. He really managed to reach the CSU, said Oberreuter.
